A One-on-One Discussion with a Former Student
At Diploma Access Academy, our success stories speak volumes. Recently we sat down with graduate Joshua Pasillas to hear about his experience as an online high school student and how we helped him meet his graduation and career certification goals.
What didn’t work for you at your traditional high school?
I felt physically, emotionally, and mentally overwhelmed to stay on top of schoolwork at my original high school. I was someone who needed help and didn’t know how to help myself.
What obstacles to your learning and education did you struggle with?
My home life and personal life were overwhelming and complicated. Being unhappy and feeling so powerless in my reality was very challenging. I struggled with social skills and anxiety. I lacked motivation and was wasting my time in ways that weren’t beneficial to my future.
How did Diploma Access Academy help you bridge the digital divide to achieve success as an online student?
The program gave me the opportunity and tools I needed to work from home or anywhere at any time. I believe this experience really helped me “wake up” and set goals for myself, in the way that no matter where you end up or decide to go, there’s always a chance for positive change. It became very clear that the choice to succeed or fail was my own. I can’t say it was always easy to make the right choices, but once I made them, in the end I was solid.
How did Diploma Access Academy’s teachers and case managers help you overcome social and emotional barriers?
With the help of my teachers, I was free from judgment and able to embrace accountability for myself. Being who I am and who I was, I can’t say that I was always an easy person or student. But they pushed me and held me accountable. They brought awareness to the power of choice.
What type of student would you recommend our program to?
I would recommend this program to anyone who struggles with social anxiety and a lack of motivation. The program minimizes some of those social constructs that can seem unbearable at a regular high school.
